3 Day Professional Development Covering WebCT (Introduction, Module Designer Training, Instructor Training), Digital Story Telling, Creating Training and Support with Captivate, Podcasting and Web2.0 Applications. Please note this is delivered over three days, 29th, 30th and 31st January.

This two-part workshop (29/01/2008 and 12/02/2008) is designed for staff with teaching responsibilities who have been recently appointed to VU. It focuses on learning and teaching in the VU context and follows a student centred approach. It should not be confused with the VU induction which covers administrative/employment matters. As attendance at both sessions is required, please enrol only if you can attend both. The first session on January 29 runs from 9.30-3pm and the second session on February 12 from 9-11am. Assessment tasks will be available which if completed will provide access to the Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching.

Would you like to begin to supplement your face to face teaching with an online unit? If so, this workshop is for you. This workshop introduces you to Blackboard Campus Edition 6 (formerly known as WebCT CE6)- you will design and build a basic online unit you can begin teaching with. This workshop is for both Higher Education users of WebCT and Tafe teachers using TafeVC.

This workshop introduces the concepts of online assessments (quizzes, self-tests) and assignments through Blackboard CE6 (formerly known as WebCT CE6). It also looks at the student management functions - using the gradebook to manage online and offline marks, tracking students and so on. The workshop also covers the group manager - using Blackboard to set up student groups randomly, manually or even by sign up sheets and then using the manager to stream activities and information to particular groups. This workshop is for both Higher Ed and TAFE teachers

General overview of myVU & Result Entry via myVU for TAFE staff. myVU allows staff to view student records including: Personal Details & Enrolment Information. Staff can also run Enrolment & Curriculumn reports and view Examination timetables. TAFE staff are able to enter student Results. You can print the relevant myVU User Guides from our Intranet site, under Student Systems, Access & Training.

What is Web 2.0? How can it be used in education? This session intoduces the concept of Web2.0 and explores have you can use it in an educational setting.

Using simple technology to tell your own story Digital stories provide a means of engaging students in reflection through the use of stories and media. Adobe Captivate makes it easy to create online interactive demos and tutorials. You will learn how to capture all on-screen activity, such as mouse movements, key strokes, and child windows, and then save it as a series of slides that play like a movie. All information that shows on your computer screen can be captured with Captivate. The workshop will also look at how audio can be integrated into the movie by recording voice narration during or after the screen capture and by importing audio files. A variety of other elements will also be explored, such as captions, buttons, click boxes, quiz questions and branching, can be added to the movie to engage the audience.

This workshop is designed to demonstrate the functionality of equipment installed in all University Lecture Theatres. This includes instruction on how to use the installed personal computer, DVD/VHS player, lighting, microphone, connecting your personal laptop to the system etc. Learn how this technology can assist you in your teaching.

Covers the basics designing/building in Blackboard WebCT - setting up a course, uploading files and choosing tools. Note - there will be an afternoon session covering more advanced teaching related features - please register for that session separately.

This session focuses on how to use the data in a Corporate Document to create your own report. Also covers basic formatting using BusinessObjects.

A foundation for work life at VU, this offers new staff insight into the development & strategic direction of the University as well as a range of important issues, benefits and services available to them.

Students negotiate a learning plan for the units of study for the graduate certificate of tertiary education based on the documentation of Capabilities of Victoria University Teaching Staff. This unit is taught using learner-centred approaches and incorporates a range of learning activities, discussion with peers either online or face-to-face, inquiry into the student’s own practice or another workplace-based project.

What is a wiki? What can I use a wiki for? This sessions explores wikis in the context of education, group work and group assessment.

Elgg is a “personal learning landscape” which incorporates personal blogs and profiles with community blogs and wikis. This workshop introduces teachers to Elgg, helps them create their profiles and personal blog spaces and explores using blogs and social networking for teaching. Wikis are covered more fully in the Wiki workshop listed separately.

How to create, approve and release Purchase Requisitions in accordance with VU Purchasing Policies and Procedures.

The University has an institutional licence for Turnitin.com, a web-based electronic plagiarism detection service which is available to staff across the University. Turnitin checks student assignments against each other, against previously submitted assignments, and against the internet and various journal databases. This workshop shows you how to set up classes and assignments in Turnitin. The Turnitin system is now integrated with Blackboard (WebCT) which makes setting up Turnitin assignments for your class even easier.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn how Elluminate Live! combines many different tools into one interface creating a web-based classroom that can be used in real time, either with a whole class or with a group within a class. It works on a Mac or a PC (and other systems) and equally well on a 28k modem and broadband. It can be used by an individual (for recording and practice) or as many as feasible with the content, connections and bandwidth available. Two-way audio using voice-over Internet protocol (VOIP), video/webcam transmission, application sharing, text chat capabilities and the ability to breakout into groups.

This workshop will teach you how to navigate VUSIS, look up student information and to understand the information displayed.

This special 2 hour presentation is specifically designed for those who are producing materials such as print materials (books, journal articles etc), videos and course packs or conducting interviews for research at VU. We will examine what falls under VU licence agreements as well as how to deal with third-party material such as photographs, music and video material off the web. We will look at recent Copyright amendments and tell you where you can get an ISBN. Participants will receive a kit which will include examples of permissions letters, waivers, documents that assign copyright, publishing agreements, and copyright warning notices. A 2 day workshop (8 and 15 April) to become a University First Aider. Provides participants with the essential skills and knowledge required to manage life threatening emergencies until professional help arrives.

Look at ways of preparing for an interview to minimise nerves. Covers how to describe your skills and capabilities and present for an interview. Work through behavioural style interview questions and workshop ways of anwering them.

The program is run over four half day sessions in April 2008 (Wednesday 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th). Attendance at all sessions is required. The Higher Education Promotions Policy specifies that academic staff seeking promotion should prepare a portfolio of evidence of their work as an academic. This portfolio supports claims they make for promotion to a higher level. This session looks at what counts as evidence for teaching, research and service in an application for promotion. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of evidence they may use. Facilitated by Rhonda Hallett, Staff College.
